New lighting systems for Navy Offshore Patrol Vessels
New lighting systems for Navy Offshore Patrol Vessels
A new contract between Luerssen Australia and Versalux Marine is seeing a new fleet of Royal Australian Navy Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) armed with new lighting systems that draw on innovative lighting design and meet complex military standards and specifications, promising to help keep our service people safe at sea.
The primary role of the vessels will be to undertake constabulary missions, maritime patrol and response duties. They will operate alongside Australian Border Force vessels, other Australian Defence Force units and other regional partners.
Vessel design will support specialist mission packages and have Versalux Marine solutions on board.
Versalux Marine, together with partner Glamox, will fulfil all lighting requirements to all twelve ships, from the simple berth lights through to the robust exterior lighting systems, complex emergency lighting and navigation lighting.
It’s a very comprehensive process that requires more than just the delivery and installation of lights,” Versalux Marine’s Mr Jorg Koch-Losekamm, General Manager Maritime & Defence said. “The design, for example, includes the interaction with the Ships Management System to ensure that each lighting system has back-up plans, providing the Navy with an easy and secure operation of additional functionality.”
Versalux Marine has a solid history of delivering critical and complex lighting solutions to the Royal Australian Navy, having been operating in the lighting business since 1979, and having successfully delivered projects involving ANZAC Frigates, Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR), Canberra class amphibious assault ship (LHD), and Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD), to name a few.
“Luerssen Australia is recognising the competence and capabilities of Versalux Marine and look forward to a successful development, integration and in-service support phase for the SEA1180 program,” says Luerssen Australia CEO, Jens Nielsen.
“A key challenge in this project will be to integrate the new lighting systems into the ships’ existing Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS),” added Mr Koch-Losekamm. “That being said, with our local expertise all sitting under one roof within Australia, together with our forty plus years of experience in delivering innovative lighting systems for the Royal Australian Navy, we know that we can work with Luerssen Australia to once again deliver this project in an effective and timely manner.”
The contract was awarded in late 2018 and will stretch over twelve years.
